Tips to make a long-distance relationship work
Many couples have been going through this intense experience: the lack of regular physical proximity can be emotionally tough. Despite technology, which offers instant responses in this age of Skyping and texting, it is challenging.
The good news is, studies have found that long-distance relationship quality does not differ significantly from geographically close relationships, and in some cases, it might even be better. Here are some tips to improve your chances of a healthy, lasting love.
1. Prioritize your schedules well. Making time for communicating with each other is pivotal, so try to arrange windows of high quality talking with each other. That means keeping in consideration mutual work schedules, sleep preferences and time zones.
2. Make sure you both agree on the premises. Always talk about the expectations of exactly what the outcome of your separation will be, without making promises that you can’t be sure to honor.
3. Use all your senses. Too many long-distance couples rely on technology too much. It can’t be FaceTime and Whatsapp only, you need something to physically remind each other’s presence. It can be a funny postcard, un unexpected gift or even his or her favorite shirt that smells like your partner.
4. Quality is better than quantity. When you’re far away one from each other, you soon realize that your communication opportunities are precious, since you don’t have all the time. This gives you the advantage of selecting the words you use. Plan accordingly to make sure you say the things you mean to say.
These tips can help you make sure that you and your sweetheart feel to be together in your long-distance relationship, no matter how many states (or countries) separate you. Good luck!
